Prior to receiving this Maxum on trade, Pier 33 commissioned a structural survey to identify stringer & transom moisture problems. Based upon the surveyor's recommendations, Pier 33 acquired the Maxum and proceeded with needed repairs. Core samples taken from the stringers showed that the stringers still had structural integrity, but needed to be dried. Transom samples indicated high moisture levels and deteriorating wood. The repair process included removing both engines and transom assemblies. The stringers were drilled in multiple locations and dried internally with forced dry air, with moisture conditions monitored until the stringers were dry enough to fill with West system epoxy and re-seal. One cross-member was cut-out and replaced. Transom repair was more extensive. The inner laminate was removed to expose the layers of reinforcing plywood and the wet wood was removed. New marine plywood was cut to fit and then reglassed into place. Transom assemblies, engines & drives were then reinstalled. Pier 33 provides this information as a forthright summary of what steps were taken to solve these somewhat common problems. Although the fixes were time-consuming and expensive, Pier 33 is now able to confidently bring the boat onto the market in satisfactory condition, with the full expectation that the buyer will have this work inspected by a marine surveyor.DISCLAIMER |
